Learning About Shapes

Today we made pizzas using shapes.  We had a yellow hexagon for the cheesy base,  red circles for tomato or salami or pepperoni and green rectangles for capsicum, white squares for onion and lemon yellow triangles for pineapple.   It was a lot of fun making the pizzas.  After we had made them we practised our counting and number writing skills by counting each shape and writing the number.  We are loving learning about shapes!

Being A Learner: Learning About Heavy and Light

Today we made the scales using an old can and a the lid of a shoe box.  We compared a group of objects and their weight. It was a lot of fun comparing objects.  Then we worked in groups and classified objects according to their weight.  It was fun working together in groups.
Next we will compare how many cubes it takes to weigh objects.

Being A Learner: Super Mathlete Misty

This week Misty won the Super Mathlete trophy because she was the student in the Kakano Team who earned the most Mathletics points last week.
Room One was also the top class in the team last week.

Well done Room One and Misty!

Being A Learner: Our Shape Walk

Today we went on a Shape Walk around our school.
We were able to identify lots of shapes within our playground.
It was exciting to take our learning outside into our wider school environment.
We have put the photos into a slideshow and we are going to write about what we found.

Being A Learner: Learning About Shapes

Today we started learning about Shapes.
We talked about 2D and 3D shapes and Miss Collins put the shapes into a feeley bag and we practised asking questions to guess the shape.
Next we made shape pizzas and then we counted the shapes we used.  This is our first work on the wall!  They look great!

Being A Learner: Fabulous Fractions

Over the last two weeks Room One have been learning about fractions.  Our Teachers found that when they tested us we didn't know about halves and quarters so they decided to teach us about them so that we know what these words mean.  Our Teachers planned lots of cool activities like fraction fairy bread, cutting up shapes, making pizza, cutting up fruit and cutting and eating cake.  We enjoyed making the connection with food and our everyday world.  We also did some sorting of fractions and cut up strips and labelled them.  Learning was lots of fun!

Here are some photos our learning about Fabulous Fractions...

Being A Learner: Fabulous Fractions in Room One

This week we have been learning about fractions in Room One.  We have been investigating halves and quarters of different things like play dough, fairy bread and fruit.  Yesterday Mr Woods, our school caretaker found us some oranges in the shed and he thought they could help us with our learning.  The children told Miss Collins about how much fruit they had in their hand or mouth.
Miss Collins thought the photos were fantastic!

Being A Learner: Learning About 2D Shapes

For the past two weeks, we have been learning about 2D shapes.  We have been learning their names and what makes them special like the number of sides or faces.   Our learning has been done in different ways like creative activities (check out our dinosaurs), through learning outside and hands on practical activities.

Here are some videos to help us with our learning.

BEING A LEARNER: Making patterns using pompoms and paint

For the last two weeks we have been working on patterns.  Miss Collins noticed on our school entry testing that many of us found reading and making patterns a little tricky.  So Miss Philp, Mrs Tizzard and Miss Collins planned some Math lessons around patterns to help us learn more about patterns.

We have created patterns, looked at patterns and discussed what comes next, shared patterns and described to others how to make patterns.  Some our learning about patterns has even been artwork!  We are enjoying learning about patterns.

We watched the Very Hungry Caterpillar on You Tube and then we make our own Hungry Caterpillar patterns using paint and pompoms.  It was lots of fun and it made us think!

The pompom and paint ready to go!

We had to dip the pompom in the paint carefully and think about what came next and where our pattern repeated itself.

We made two caterpillars.  Miss Collins is going to put these on the wall once we have drawn legs on them.

Being A Learner: We have been learning how to make different patterns

For the last two weeks we have been working on patterns.  Miss Collins noticed on our school entry testing that many of us found reading and making patterns a little tricky.  So Miss Philp, Mrs Tizzard and Miss Collins planned some Math lessons around patterns to help us learn more about patterns.

We have created patterns, looked at patterns and discussed what comes next, shared patterns and described to others how to make patterns.  Some our learning about patterns has even been artwork!  We are enjoying learning about patterns.

We made pattern necklaces using Fruitloops with Mrs Ellis.  It was a little tricky thread them on!  We took them home to eat for afternoon tea.

Miss Frisby helped us thread the Fruitloops on.
