Crazy Hair Day

On Thursday the 9th August we had a Mufti Day and Crazy Hair Day at School to raise funds for Kids Can who help us out at school.  It was awesome to support this charity!  We had a fun day and it was exciting seeing everyone's creations.

Inquiry Learning in Room 1

We talked about a special celebration we are having at School next week to celebrate 110 years of Linwood North School.  We talked about how 110 is a big number and we looked at some photos and videos of school 100 years ago. It was very different!

We learnt these things:

  • The teachers had canes to hurt children
  • That sometimes children had to go to work and weren't allowed to go to school
  • Girls and boys sometimes went to different schools
  • The uniforms were very different to what we wear today
  • They didn't have whiteboards
  • They wrote on slates

After looking at the videos Miss Collins took a photo of us and put it through and again app so we could see what we would look like in the future when we were older.   We all thought it was very funny but interesting.

Being A Learner: Our First PE Lesson

We have started our Run, Jump, Throw PE unit.  As part of this we learn how to throw a shot put and discus, run in lanes, jump over hurdles and the high jump, long jump and long distance running.  It is a lot to learn!  We get to showcase our skills at our whole School Athletics Day at the end of the term.  Here are some photos of us practising our shot put.

Being A Learner: Our First Kiwisport Lesson with Nate

On Friday we had our first Kiwisport lesson with Nate.  We have Kiwisport every second Friday and every other Friday we practise the skills that we learnt at the last lesson.
We played a game to develop our locomotor skills which involved us moving around others.  This is an important skill for invasion games.

After that we played a game where we had to move through the hoops in different ways and drop a bean bag for the next person in our team to pick up.  It was good to practise taking turns in a relay situation.

Being A Learner: Room One is OPEN for Learning!

This year we welcomed 11 new learners into Room One with Miss Collins and Mrs Cherry.  We have been busy learning the new school routines and getting to know each other.    Miss Collins teaches us until 11.30am and then Mrs Cherry takes over.

When we come to school we have a daily 'Morning Message' to complete.  Miss Collins changes it each day.  On Tuesday we drew our family and Miss Collins took a photo.

Being A Learner: Learning About Heavy and Light

Today we made the scales using an old can and a the lid of a shoe box.  We compared a group of objects and their weight. It was a lot of fun comparing objects.  Then we worked in groups and classified objects according to their weight.  It was fun working together in groups.
Next we will compare how many cubes it takes to weigh objects.

Being A Learner: Maths Games to Support our Learning

This week we are using QR Codes on the iPads or websites on the computer to reinforce our learning in Maths.  Here are the links that we are using so akonga (learners) can access their learning from anywhere.

Here are the QR codes.  These are great as they take you straight to the website, providing you have a QR Code Reader (downloadable for free).
If you click the game name, it will take you to the website too.

Being A Learner: Fabulous Fractions

Over the last two weeks Room One have been learning about fractions.  Our Teachers found that when they tested us we didn't know about halves and quarters so they decided to teach us about them so that we know what these words mean.  Our Teachers planned lots of cool activities like fraction fairy bread, cutting up shapes, making pizza, cutting up fruit and cutting and eating cake.  We enjoyed making the connection with food and our everyday world.  We also did some sorting of fractions and cut up strips and labelled them.  Learning was lots of fun!

Here are some photos our learning about Fabulous Fractions...

Being A Learner: Room One's Letter of the Week is... Ii

Room One's Letter of the Week is... Ii

We have learnt all of the letters of the alphabet and are back at the beginning.  We use the Jolly Phonics order to teach our letters.  So we don't teach the letters/sounds A, B, C etc.

The order we use is...

    s, a, t, i, p, n
    ck, e, h, r, m, d
    g, o, u, l, f, b
ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or
    z, w, ng, v, oo(book), oo (moon)
    y, x, ch, sh, th

We use this order so that we can learn to quickly write small words like sat, sit, pit, pin, tin etc.  Each child has a sounds booklet to practice at home.  We also use this video clip at school each day to help us.

Each week we focus on a letter/sound to learn, read and write about.  We do this through phonics, singing, reading stories, handwriting, alphabet activities, letter writing, play dough, Language Experience, make and do and lots of other things.

This week for Language Experience we are making something beginning with Ii.  Can you think of something that begins with Ii.

This week we are learning about the letter Ii.    We will learn its name, its sound, how to write and recognise it and about some things that begin with this letter.

The teachers love planning exciting learning experiences to help us learn our letters.

At the moment we LOVE alphabet songs so Miss Collins has posted a couple of videos/songs about the letter Aa that we might like.

How many Ii words can you see and hear in these You Tube Clips Room One?

Being A Learner: Fabulous Fractions in Room One

This week we have been learning about fractions in Room One.  We have been investigating halves and quarters of different things like play dough, fairy bread and fruit.  Yesterday Mr Woods, our school caretaker found us some oranges in the shed and he thought they could help us with our learning.  The children told Miss Collins about how much fruit they had in their hand or mouth.
Miss Collins thought the photos were fantastic!

Being A Learner, Being Respectful and Responsible: Discovery Time Term 3, Week 3

Each Friday we have Discovery Time.  It is our favourite time of the week.  Here are some photos of some of the people in Room One having a great time.  We practise taking risks, taking turns, making choices around our learning, making new friends, working with different people, our school values and lots of other things!

Rahnui is 6 Today! Happy Birthday Rahnui!

Today Rahnui turned 6.  She is an extra special member of Room One and has spent some extra time with Room One settling into school.  Unfortunately, Rahnui has been been unwell over the last week which has meant she has had to spend her birthday in hospital.  Miss Collins went and visited her today in hospital and wished her a 'Happy 6th Birthday'.

Rahnui has lots of tubes to her her breathe and to monitor her heart which looks a little scary but they are just helping her while her chest is weak.  Miss Collins played some Maori waiata that Rahnui likes to listen to and she smiled.  She also like hearing Miss Collins' voice as Rahnui's hearing is very good.    Rahnui's Mum said it is the first smile she has had for a week.  We think it is a sign that she is starting to feel better!

Rahnui is beginning to feel better and we look forward to her return to school so we can pass on our birthday wishes.  Her Mum and Nannie are doing a wonderful job of looking after her with the doctors and nurses.

Here is a Happy Birthday song from all of us.
