Learning to Mix Colours and Being A Learner

As part of our Painting we have been learning to mix primary colours together to make secondary colours.  Miss Collins gave us a blank fish and we had to paint the head starting with yellow and then add a little bit of red each time until we reached the tail which had to be red.

So far we have learnt that...

RED + YELLOW = ORANGE

and

BLUE + YELLOW = GREEN

Here are some photos of use learning how to hold a paintbrush like a pencil, add a little of another colour and how to correctly apply paint onto paper.  We were painting superstars!

Here is Lucas adding red to his yellow.

Cody is holding his paintbrush like a pencil.

Mualijcia is trying to add more yellow to her red to make it lighter.

Lupe is taking care with her painting and is painting each fish scale.

Micheal took care with his work.

Lorenzo held his paintbrush like a pencil.

Tredestiny is taking care with her work.

Let's Go Fly A Kite...

This week we have focused on writing poetry as part of our writing programme and School Wide Literacy Week.  The Teachers and students have enjoyed exploring how to write different poems.  It was lovely to see students sharing their poetry at the Kakano Poetry Slam last Friday.

We concluded our school week with a combined Literacy Week and Inquiry celebration.  The whole school made kites, which had pictures of our family on them.  As a school we went and flew our kites with our buddies.  It was an absolute to see the huge smiles on our learner’s faces as they flew their kites.  I could see the children focusing and thinking about their kite and taking risks to see how they could get their kite higher in the air.

Pasifika Time with Latu

Today we had our second Cultural lesson with Latu from Niu Preschool.  Latu bought some of the older students from Niu Preschool to help us learn the new songs.  It was a fun time  together learning new hiva (Tongan for song).

This term Rooms One and Five are having Pasifika time together each Friday afternoon and Rooms Two and Four are having Kapa Haka with Stacey, Cane and Jonathan's Mum.  In Term 2 we will swap over.  We look forward to sharing our learning with our whanau later in the year.

Our Butterflies Hatched!

In the holidays Miss Collins bought Room One a swan plant.  A swan plant is the special kind of plant that the Monarch Butterfly lays hers eggs on.  A Monarch Butterfly laid eggs on our plant and they hatched into caterpillars. The catterpillars ate ALL of our swan plant and got really fat.  Then they hung upside down like the letter J.  After a wee while they went into a chrysalis.  We have been waiting a long time for our butterflies to hatch and today the did!  It was very exciting!

Here is a link if you want to more learning at home:

This is us watching the butterfly hatch from the cocoon.

This is the butterfly flapping its wings to dry them so it can fly away and lay some more eggs.

Welcome Back to School Powhiri

Today we started school with a Powhiri to welcome all of the new people to Linwood North School.  We welcomed two teachers and about 20 children.  It was wonderful to see so many parents stay on for this special occasion. Our Kapa Haka group performed for us and Ms Smith and Mrs Leatham both did a great job of calling us on and replying.

Making Salt Dough Fossils and Bones

Miss Collins made use some salt dough at home foe us to make bones and fossils out of.  First we had a play with the dough and some of us found that it hurt the little cuts we had in our hands.  Then Miss Collins handed out the dinosaurs and we pushed them into the salt dough to make a fossil.  We had to be careful not push a hole in the salt dough.  After that we pinched and rolled dough to make a bone shape.  We looked at dinosaur skeletons to get ideas.  After school Miss Collins cooked them for us and made them go hard.  Next we will tag them like real scientists.
