Being A Learner: Fabulous Fractions

Over the last two weeks Room One have been learning about fractions.  Our Teachers found that when they tested us we didn't know about halves and quarters so they decided to teach us about them so that we know what these words mean.  Our Teachers planned lots of cool activities like fraction fairy bread, cutting up shapes, making pizza, cutting up fruit and cutting and eating cake.  We enjoyed making the connection with food and our everyday world.  We also did some sorting of fractions and cut up strips and labelled them.  Learning was lots of fun!

Here are some photos our learning about Fabulous Fractions...

BEING A LEARNER: Our letter of the week is Jj

Room One's Letter of the Week is... Jj

Each week we focus on a letter to learn, read and write about.  We do this through phonics, singing, reading stories, handwriting, alphabet activities, letter writing, playdough, Language Experience, make and do and lots of other things.

This week we are learning about the letter Jj.  We will learn its name, its sound, how to write and recognise it and about some things that begin with this letter.

The teachers love planning exciting learning experiences to help us learn our letters.

At the moment we LOVE alphabet songs so Miss Collins has posted a couple about the letter Jj that we might like.

How many Jj words can you see and hear in these You Tube Clips Room One?

Here is NEW clip where you have to find the things that start with Jj.  In this video the capital letter looks a little different to how we write it but it is good to get used to seeing how some people write the letter J.

The Gingerbread Man

Last week we decorated  Gingerbread Me at Discovery Time as our letter of the week was Gg.  Mrs Tizzard had made them home so they were ready to eat.
We enjoyed making the gingerbread men.  After we decorated them, we ate them!
They were delicious!

Here is some Gingerbread Man Maths to help us with our counting.

School Cross Country

Today we had our school Cross Country.  Room One ran first with Room Two.  We managed to run all the way round without stopping.
It was exciting taking part in Cross Country for the first time.
We had been training since last term and when we started running we couldn't run around the field non-stop.  Our fitness has improved!
We enjoyed cheering our whanau, buddies and friends on as they raced.
A big thanks to the parents who came and watched us!

This photo shows the different things we did today.  We lined up ready to be called for our race.  Then we sat on the start/finish line.  After that we got ready and Mr Marsh blew his whistle to set us off.  We ran around the field without stopping all the way to the finish line.  The last photos are of the first and second place getters in Room One.

Our Sponge Capsule Stories

Last Monday as part of Language Experience we put sponge capsules into warm water and observed the capsule dissolve and turn into a sponge.  First we made a prediction about what might be inside the capsule and then we put it in the water and corrected our predictions.  Some of us were correct but it turns out the packet wasn't correct for most of the shapes and we got a mixture.
We were learning about the letters Cc and Kk and that is why we did capsule experiments.

Here is a photo of the capsules.  Miss Collins got them from the $2 Shop at Riccarton.

During the week we wrote about our Language Experience.

We are learning to write the sounds that we can hear.  Here are our stories...

P is for Pirate Arrrrrrrrrr

Today Room One and Two had a treasure hunt as part of Language Experience.  First we made pirate hats and either made eye patches or borrowed the teachers.  We were a fearsome bunch of pirates with a scary arrrrrrrrr.

As we went around, we wondered what the treasure was.  Mrs Tizzard thought maybe it was jewels and Miss Collins thought she like the sound of that.  It was  a windy day to be a pirate!
Then we had to follow clues around the school.  Eventually we found our treasure and it was hidden in the school garden!  It was gold chocolate money!

This week we will write about our treasure hunting.  Watch this space for our stories!
