Being A Learner: The Letter of the Week is Ss

This week our Poem is a tongue twister...

Here is a video clip to help us learn our tongue twister...

Each week we focus on a letter to learn, read and write about.  We do this through phonics, singing, reading stories, handwriting, alphabet activities, letter writing, play dough, make and do and lots of other things.

This week we are learning about the letter Ss.  We will learn its name, its sound, how to write and recognise it and about some things that begin with this letter.

At the moment we LOVE alphabet songs so Miss Collins has posted a couple of videos/songs about the letter Ss that we might like.

BEING A LEARNER: Reading Action Stations

This term we have started a new programme at Reading Time called Action Stations.  This involves the children working through different stations of reading activities independently.  The teachers still take reading groups like normal.   These are set up before school so parents can explore the activities with their children.   We are enjoying the new activities and having the choice of what activities we do first.  We have special rules and things to focus on.  At the end of each session we take time to reflect on our learning.

A Funny Swimming Poem...

Here is a wee poem to get you ready for swimming and to have a giggle about...
Click on the picture or the title and you can hear the poet read this poem aloud.

Swimming in the swimming pool
is where I like to "B,"
wearing underwater goggles
so that I can "C."
Yesterday, before I swam,
I drank a cup of "T."
Now the pool is just an "ool"
because I took a "P."

One Of Our Favourite Things At School Is...Make And Do

One of our favourite things at school is Make and Do.  Make and Do is something that we usually do on  a Wednesday.  Each week Miss Collins writes Room One a set of instructions on how to make something.   Usually it is something to do with the alphabet letter that we are learning that week.  We read through the instructions together and Miss Collins puts pictures to help us.

We follow the instructions to make something.  When we are following the instructions we are also practising skills we need for school and life like cutting out tricky shapes, following instructions and making sure that we can comprehend or understand what we have read.   So far we have made snakes, alligators, turtles, pigs,  nests and cute cats.  We look forward to each weeks Make and Do.  Afterwards the children take them home as they want to show their families how clever they are and how their cutting skills are improving!

Art And Alphabet In Room One

This week we have been learning the letter Kk.  We brainstormed things that started with Kk and came up with King, kangaroo, kiwifruit, kiwi, keys and koala.  As part of Reading we made crowns so we could be Kings and the girls could be Queens.  We even put jewels on our crowns like Kings and Queens.

As part of Art we have been learning to draw ourselves.  We drew our face and shoulders using pencil and then we traced over our lines with black marker.  We also painted crowns and sprinkled glitter on them to make them sparkly.  Then Miss Collins cut them out and stuck them on us.  We did a great job of drawing our face and we remembered to put all of the things on our face like eyebrows, ears and a nose.

Don't we look very royal!

Ahoy Me Hearties - Pirate Party Cakes

In Room One we have been learning to identify the letter P, write it and find it in words.    To help us learn the letter P, Miss Collins made us Pirate treasure Hunt.  We all dressed up as pirates and had to find and read clues to work out where the treasure was.  Miss Collins helped us read the clues.  We had to go to a lot places that started with P like the pantry, a pigeon hole, the Principal and the photocopier.

Eventually we found the treasure by reading all of the clues and Mrs Woodhall
had it in her Office.  The treasure was Pirate Party Cakes!  They were really yummy!

We looked at the photos and we wrote about our Pirate Party Cakes.  You can read these on the wall in our classroom.
We had lots of fun learning about the letter P!
