Being A Learner: The letter Cc and the Letter Kk

We use the Jolly Phonics order to teach our letters.  So we don't teach the letters/sounds A, B, C etc in order.

The order we use is...

    s, a, t, i, p, n
    ck, e, h, r, m, d
    g, o, u, l, f, b
ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or
    z, w, ng, v, oo(book), oo (moon)
    y, x, ch, sh, th

We use this order so that we can learn to quickly write small words like sat, sit, pit, pin, tin etc.  Each child has a sounds booklet to practice at home.  We also use this video clip at school each day to help us.

Each week we focus on a letter/sound to learn, read and write about.  We do this through phonics, singing, reading stories, handwriting, alphabet activities, letter writing, play dough, Language Experience, make and do and lots of other things.

This week we are learning about the letter Cc and the letter Kk.    We will learn its name, its sound, how to write and recognise it and about some things that begin with this letter.

The teachers love planning exciting learning experiences to help us learn our letters.

At the moment we LOVE alphabet songs so Miss Collins has posted a couple of videos/songs about the letter Cc and the letter Kk that we might like.

Being A Learner: Xx is for Xylophone

Today at Discovery Time Mrs Tizzard organised Xylophone Biscuits for us to make.  She saw the idea on Pinterest.  Mrs Tizzard made the biscuit using a rectangle cookie cutter.  She used the basic biscuit recipe which we have used before to make biscuits.

We watched a video about xylophones and Miss Collins borrowed Mrs O's from the music rooms for us to play.  We worked in our writing and handwriting groups. Each teacher took a different group.  First we iced them using different coloured icing.  Room 3 had green, Room 2 had pink and Room One had blue.  Next we put two tiny M & M Minis at each end.  We had to show persistence in icing the biscuits as that was tricky!

Then we went back to our class and put the biscuits together to make them look like a xylophone.    After that it was three o'clock and we took our biscuits home to eat!  They were yummy!

Being A Learner: Olympic Themed Language Experience

On Monday we had an Olympic Themed Language Experience.  We went into workshops and each teacher provided a different activity.  In Room One the students made Olympic Ring bracelets with Miss Collins.  We watched a short video about the rings and found out the colours represent the different flags from around the World.

In Room Two the students made gold medals using chocolate coins and ribbons.  We had to glue gun the ribbon on and that was a little tricky!  We loved making the medals!

In Room Three we made New Zealand flags to wave for when win Gold medals.  Mrs Sprosen talked about our flag and why it is special.

Being A Learner: Vv is for Volcano

Today we learnt about volcanoes.  It was a chance to learn some new words and talk about what volcanoes do.  Miss Collins made us a salt dough volcano so that we could recreate a volcano through a science experiment.

Miss Collins put baking soda, yellow and red food colouring and malt vinegar in the chimney of our volcano to create magma and lava erupting.  We loved watching the volcano erupt and thought that we might like to try this experiment at home.

Here are the videos we watched at Writing and Language Experience time.

Being A Learner: Ww is for Walruses

Today we watched a You Tube Clip about Walruses as part of our Writing.  We watched the video one and then we watched it again to gain more information.  It was interesting!

Here is the video clip that we watched.

After that, we created a plan with three ideas using pictures.  Next we will write about our three points into a story.  Watch this space!  This will be our first writing on our wall this term!

Being A Learner: Ww is for Windmills

Today for Language Experience we made windmills because windmills start with Ww.

BEING A LEARNER: Reading Action Stations

This term we have started a new programme at Reading Time called Action Stations.  This involves the children working through different stations of reading activities independently.  The teachers still take reading groups like normal.   These are set up before school so parents can explore the activities with their children.   We are enjoying the new activities and having the choice of what activities we do first.  We have special rules and things to focus on.  At the end of each session we take time to reflect on our learning.
