I lIke To Move It Inquiry Launch

Today we launched our Inquiry "I Like To Move It!"
Room One and Two got together with their teachers and we talked about what Science experiment that we were going to do.  The teachers showed us the equipment that we needed.  Lots of us didn't realise that there was different kinds of Coca Cola and that Mentos were lollies.
First we formed a question, which was "What will happen if we put a packet of Mentos into a bottle of Coke or Diet Coke?"  Then we made our hypothesis which is when we predict what we thought would happen.

This is what we thought...
- The Mentos might sink to the bottom.
- The Coca Cola might explode out of the bottle.
- There might be fizzing.
- There maybe foaming and it could turn white.
- There might be Cocal Cola everywhere

We went outside and sat in a semi circle.
Miss Philp put the Mentos lollies in the full Coca Cola first.

Here is video of what happened with the Coca Cola...

Then Miss Collins put the Mentos in the Diet Coca Cola.

After the experiment we came and did some wondering and thinking.  We practised asking questions.  Miss Collins wrote them on the window in the Learning Centre so we could see our thinking and come back to it later.  Check out our wonderings...

Science Experiments Using Forces

On Tuesday we did our first Science experiment with Room Two.  First Miss Collins told us that we were going to move paint on a page but we weren't sure how.  We thought we could move it around using a our fingers or a spoon.  Then Miss Collins told us we were going to be given a straw.  Next we formed a question, which was "How can we use a straw to move paint around a piece of paper?"

After that we formed a hypothesis which is when you predict what you think will happen.
We thought...
- The paint might go all over us.
- The paint might splash off the page
- Paint could end up in our mouth.

After that Miss Collins and Miss Philp explained what we were going to do and recorded it on our experiment chart.  We wrote it down because that is what 'real' scientists do.

We carried out the experiment and we found out that we could move the paint around the page by blowing down the straw.  The paint was quite thick and hard to move around.  Room One then tried the experiment again with dye which was thinner and it moved around the page more easily.  The dye spread like fireworks.
The air forced the paint and dye to move around the page.

Our Swimming Lessons At Aquagym

Room One went swimming today at Aquagym Pool.  It was Tredestiny's first day at school too.
This is what we thought about swimming today...

"I liked going under the water." said Izzan.

"I was brave today because I went swimming and splashing." said Cody.

"Swimming today was fun." said Lorenzo.

"I liked going under the water." said Mualijcia.

"I liked going swimming." said Lupe

We made a train in the water.

Cody was brave and got in the water.

Lorenzo is waiting his turn to swish in the pool.

Izzan was VERY brave and went under the water lots of times!

Making Salt Dough Fossils and Bones

Miss Collins made use some salt dough at home foe us to make bones and fossils out of.  First we had a play with the dough and some of us found that it hurt the little cuts we had in our hands.  Then Miss Collins handed out the dinosaurs and we pushed them into the salt dough to make a fossil.  We had to be careful not push a hole in the salt dough.  After that we pinched and rolled dough to make a bone shape.  We looked at dinosaur skeletons to get ideas.  After school Miss Collins cooked them for us and made them go hard.  Next we will tag them like real scientists.

The Discovery Room

After our Museum lesson we went exploring in the Canterbury Museum Discovery Room.  We loved it!  We were able to wander and explore different things in this room.  A big thank you to Rahel (Elshadays's Mum, Lin (Abby's Mum) and Paula (Larissa's Mum) who came on our trip to help.
