Making Seed Caterpillars

Today Room 1 and Room 2 made a seed caterpillar using an egg crate and mustard seeds.
We were using the seeds to help us with our learning of the letter S that is our phonics focus for the week.

We glued eyes on to the crate and then filled it with potting earth.

It was fun sprinkling the mustard seeds into the caterpillar. We then sprayed our seeds with some water and then put them in a safe place in Room 3 so they can germinate.
We must remember to spray our caterpillars to keep

them moist so they grow.

This is what we hope our seed caterpillar will look like.

We had to be careful adding the seeds to the soil

Making Salt Dough Fossils and Bones

Miss Collins made use some salt dough at home foe us to make bones and fossils out of.  First we had a play with the dough and some of us found that it hurt the little cuts we had in our hands.  Then Miss Collins handed out the dinosaurs and we pushed them into the salt dough to make a fossil.  We had to be careful not push a hole in the salt dough.  After that we pinched and rolled dough to make a bone shape.  We looked at dinosaur skeletons to get ideas.  After school Miss Collins cooked them for us and made them go hard.  Next we will tag them like real scientists.

The Discovery Room

After our Museum lesson we went exploring in the Canterbury Museum Discovery Room.  We loved it!  We were able to wander and explore different things in this room.  A big thank you to Rahel (Elshadays's Mum, Lin (Abby's Mum) and Paula (Larissa's Mum) who came on our trip to help.

Learning About Dinosaurs With Anthony

This week we went to the Canterbury Museum.  We went by bus and it was exciting to be going on our first school trip apart from swimming.  It was our first school trip for many of us.
First we had a lesson in the museum with Anthony.  He taught us about dinosaurs and had dinosaur parts for us to look at and touch.  Some were real or some were casts from fossils found.
Anthony taught us some key things about dinosaurs:

1. Dinosaurs live on land, they can't fly or swim
2. Dinosaurs have scales
3. All dinosaurs have straight legs
4. New dinosaurs have been discovered
5. Dinosaurs lay eggs
6. Some dinosaurs they have discovered has feathers
