Making Salt Dough Fossils and Bones

Miss Collins made use some salt dough at home foe us to make bones and fossils out of.  First we had a play with the dough and some of us found that it hurt the little cuts we had in our hands.  Then Miss Collins handed out the dinosaurs and we pushed them into the salt dough to make a fossil.  We had to be careful not push a hole in the salt dough.  After that we pinched and rolled dough to make a bone shape.  We looked at dinosaur skeletons to get ideas.  After school Miss Collins cooked them for us and made them go hard.  Next we will tag them like real scientists.

Learning About Dinosaurs With Anthony

This week we went to the Canterbury Museum.  We went by bus and it was exciting to be going on our first school trip apart from swimming.  It was our first school trip for many of us.
First we had a lesson in the museum with Anthony.  He taught us about dinosaurs and had dinosaur parts for us to look at and touch.  Some were real or some were casts from fossils found.
Anthony taught us some key things about dinosaurs:

1. Dinosaurs live on land, they can't fly or swim
2. Dinosaurs have scales
3. All dinosaurs have straight legs
4. New dinosaurs have been discovered
5. Dinosaurs lay eggs
6. Some dinosaurs they have discovered has feathers

Language Experience - Making Shoes

On Monday we made shoes out of card and threaded laces.  We decorated our shoes with crayons and could add any designs that we wanted.  When we were finished we added shiny ribbon as shoelaces.  We also stretched our mind as part of being a Healthy Hero as it took lots of brain power to thread our shoelaces.  We also wrote some stories about making our shoes.

This week we learnt the Nursery Rhyme "This Little Piggy".

This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed at home,
This little piggy had roast beef,
This little piggy had none.
And this little piggy went...
"Wee wee wee" all the way home..
.

As part of Language Experience we made pink pig biscuits.  First we got a wine biscuit and covered it with pink icing.  Next we put a pink marshmallow on it for a snout, two chocolate drops for eyes and two marshmallow halves for ears.

Making Butter and Little Miss Muffet

Last week we learnt the Nursery Rhyme "Little Miss Muffet"  In our first week back at school we made butter.  First we sat in a circle and then put cream and a pinch of salt in a jar.  After that we passed the jar around and each had a turn at shaking the jar.
The cream changed and turned into butter and we were left with whey and butter.

It was interesting to see the cream change into butter.
After we made the butter, Miss Collins washed it and then we had our butter on bread with honey and sprinkles.
It was so fresh and yummy.  We were surprised that we could make butter so easily!

McConnell Dowell Visit Room One

Today Jenny and Kelly came to visit us from McConnell Dowell to talk to us about water. We made a map with pictures of things and places like houses, schools, hoses etc that use water.

We talked about where water starts and ends up and what we use water for. We use water for drinking, cooking, watering the garden and for fun like fishing.

We learnt lots of things about water and it was fun having experts come and teach us.
