Being A Learner: Our Inquiry Celebration - A Grandparents Afternoon Tea

Today we had our Kakano Inquiry Celebration which was a Grandparents Afternoon Tea.  The students have been learning about their families and discussing things that make their family special.
Today each class made an afternoon tea item which was shared across the other classes which meant we had a selection of foods to have.  We had tea and coffee for the adults and juice for our LNS Learners.
The Room 1 Learners then showed their artwork, writing and read their browsing books to our Grandparents.  The Grandparents commented on how much they loved spending time at school with their grandchildren.   Mrs Cherry wished she was a grandparent of a LNS learner so she pretended to be Karter's Nana!    The LNS learners showed wonderful Respect by letting the adults go first and by passing plates of food around to share.

Thank you Grandparents for coming along today!

Being a Learner: Mm is for Mlikshake

Our letter of the week is Mm. On Monday we made Chocolate Milkshakes! It was a fun experience. We had to mix the milk and chocolate syrup together in a blender and it made the milkshakes all frothy. Now we are writing about our experience.
"I had a milkshake. It smelt like chocolate." By Mesake
"I drank the milkshake. It was delicious." By Lily-Jean

What's Going On Next Week?

Here is our weekly information sheet for next week.
We are going to try and ensure these are shared on here each week too.

Being A Learner: Gymnastics @ Kiwisport

Last week Nate took us for our fortnightly Kiwisport lesson.  We started our Gymnastics unit.  First we practised moving around in a small space, balancing and played a game called Space Invaders for a warm up game.  We explored moving in different ways.

After this we learnt about stretch and tuck shapes.  We practised making these.  After that we went over to the mats and learnt about pencil rolls.  We had to try and keep our bodies nice and straight.  It was tricky!  Then we learnt about a cup roll too and practised that too.

Being A Learner: The letter Cc and the Letter Kk

We use the Jolly Phonics order to teach our letters.  So we don't teach the letters/sounds A, B, C etc in order.

The order we use is...

    s, a, t, i, p, n
    ck, e, h, r, m, d
    g, o, u, l, f, b
ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or
    z, w, ng, v, oo(book), oo (moon)
    y, x, ch, sh, th

We use this order so that we can learn to quickly write small words like sat, sit, pit, pin, tin etc.  Each child has a sounds booklet to practice at home.  We also use this video clip at school each day to help us.

Each week we focus on a letter/sound to learn, read and write about.  We do this through phonics, singing, reading stories, handwriting, alphabet activities, letter writing, play dough, Language Experience, make and do and lots of other things.

This week we are learning about the letter Cc and the letter Kk.    We will learn its name, its sound, how to write and recognise it and about some things that begin with this letter.

The teachers love planning exciting learning experiences to help us learn our letters.

At the moment we LOVE alphabet songs so Miss Collins has posted a couple of videos/songs about the letter Cc and the letter Kk that we might like.

How many Cc and Kk words can you see and hear in these You Tube Clips Room One?

Being Respectful, Responsible and a Learner: Congratulations to Brooklyn, Ruby, Cairo and Maia-Grace

Today we had Whanau Time in the Kakano Block instead of our usual whole school assembly due to the rain.  Room One and Three came together in the Learning Centre to talk about our PB4L focus for the week.

Our PB4L focus for this week is Be Respectful: ‘Look after the environment and equipment’

This week Brooklyn and Ruby received the Principal's Award for Being A Learner.

Maia-Grace and Cairo-Capri received the award for 'Caught Being Good'.

It was lovely that Ruby's Dad joined us for Whanau Time.
Congratulations to our award winners for this week.

Being A Learner: Our First PE Lesson

We have started our Run, Jump, Throw PE unit.  As part of this we learn how to throw a shot put and discus, run in lanes, jump over hurdles and the high jump, long jump and long distance running.  It is a lot to learn!  We get to showcase our skills at our whole School Athletics Day at the end of the term.  Here are some photos of us practising our shot put.

Being A Learner: Our First Kiwisport Lesson with Nate

On Friday we had our first Kiwisport lesson with Nate.  We have Kiwisport every second Friday and every other Friday we practise the skills that we learnt at the last lesson.
We played a game to develop our locomotor skills which involved us moving around others.  This is an important skill for invasion games.

After that we played a game where we had to move through the hoops in different ways and drop a bean bag for the next person in our team to pick up.  It was good to practise taking turns in a relay situation.

Being A Learner: Room One is OPEN for Learning!

This year we welcomed 11 new learners into Room One with Miss Collins and Mrs Cherry.  We have been busy learning the new school routines and getting to know each other.    Miss Collins teaches us until 11.30am and then Mrs Cherry takes over.

When we come to school we have a daily 'Morning Message' to complete.  Miss Collins changes it each day.  On Tuesday we drew our family and Miss Collins took a photo.
